Got my 2 SolarStorm 400s a couple weeks ago and they are very impressive! Solidly built, bright as hell, and extremely quiet.
I'll be attempting to SCROG and Monster Crop an Afghan Kush x Black Domina strain from World of Seeds. In order to do this I'll be implementing the techniques demonstrated by HygroHybrid on YouTube. This guy is getting around a pound and a half from one SCROGed plant (Under HID/HPS lights) and the system he uses seems pretty straightforward and relatively simple.
I'm not sure if this particular strain is good for SCROG, but I'm going to do my best with it. If anyone has any insight on SCROGing Afghan Kush x Black Domina, or growing it in general, please let me know your thoughts. I chose this strain because it is listed as a fast flowering plant (45-50 days), an easy grow, and as having a 20% THC content.
So here's what I'm working with:
- Cracked 3 seeds, one seedling died. Cracked 3 more seeds 10 days later as backup. - Just under a 3.5' x 4' closet (Still working on it, so plants are photographed in two locations) - 2 SolarStorm 400s, Veg. 24/0 light cycle (Using one for now while plants are small) - Start plants in Coco Coir Pellets (Originally had Peat Pellets), Transfer to 16 oz Solo cups with Coco Coir Mix drain to waste, Transfer to DWC Net Pots with Clay Pebbles - General Hydroponics & Botanicare Nutrients, mostly
Images to follow soon....
Happy Trails, CC

Disclaimer: I still use HID and I'm NOT an LED expert. All of my LED knowledge is from other parties or research so I can't say from first hand experience one way or another. I also run a medical grow consulting business in SoCal.
August 19th, plants were moved to the new grow closet (under construction) and placed under a single SolarStorm 400w in veg cycle, approx. 24" away, on a 24/0 LED lighting schedule. (I'll be providing photos with both LED and and CFL lighting.) LEDs are shut off briefly for some photos.

By the 20th we lost one seedling.

It appears the seed's inner casing was wrapped around the seedling's stem just below the cotyledons and seemed to have choked it to death. The photo below shows another seedling with the seed's inner casing still attached to the cotyledons. I removed the casing and the cotyledons sprung open. I did a couple small grows many years ago, but don't remember having to remove this casing. It happened to 4 out of 6 seedlings from this strain. (I cracked 3 additional seeds just in case I had any problems with the first remaining two seedlings.) The seedling shown below is from the second batch I cracked.

Okay, I'm back with lots of photos and updates. I know I should post at least one per week, but I've had some growing pains (not used to Coco), along with finishing my grow room and instralling a R.O. system.
So anyway, these are the two surviving plants from the first set of 3 seeds, at 3 days on August 20....

Sorry about the blurry photo, didn't realize it until I cropped it, and its the only shot of this seedling.

The first photo is of the first two plants at 10 days old and I'm thinking they should be a bit bigger at this point. I also noticed that Jane has a dead leaf tip, not good. In addition, noticed that the margins on Mary's leaves appeared to be curling up. As I understand it, both of these symptoms could be a sign of over fertilization. I was following the General Hydroponics "Expert Drain to Waste" recommendations at a low dosage of 185 ppm. I think I backed off to 150 ppm.
Fortunately, I started a new set of backup seeds as mentioned earlier. These guys are; Eeny (Sprouted), Meeny (Next to sprout) and Miny. (Interesting origin..."http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/eeny-meeny-miny-mo.html")

Thanx SME! Sorry for the delay replying, but things are freakin' crazy here. I look forward to an awesome first grow with my new SolarStorm 400s and your Divine Guidance & Wooden Ruler. Yikes! That's for measuring the plants, right?
