April 23 2013 got the Solarstorm 400w LED light. The light was backordered and the wait was about 3 1/2 weeks. No complaints ! The light was worth the wait! The Solarstorm 400w seems to be well built, I have used the Solarflare and Blackstar LED lights in the past. I like the results when growing pepper and tomato plants with the LEDs. Before LEDs I have used HPS, CFLs, and MH. I love the results from HPS and MH but I don't like the costs and heat! With the Solarstorm, I'm gonna grow both tomato and pepper plants. A total of 8-12 plants will be grown, pepper seedlings are having a slow start, but I have 6 tomato plants ready to go!
Disclaimer: I still use HID and I'm NOT an LED expert. All of my LED knowledge is from other parties or research so I can't say from first hand experience one way or another. I also run a medical grow consulting business in SoCal.
Update since two weeks ago. Tomato plants is exploding with growth! The Solarstorm is left on for 24 hours and is roughly two feet from plants. The soil used is Foxfarm Ocean Forest. The soil was amended with calcium and magnesium. Crushed oyster shell for calcium and magnesium salt for magnesium. The tomato plants receive foxfarm growbig fertilizer. I just mix about 1-1/2 tablespoon to one gallon water. I usually water the tomato plants every 3 days.
Peppers have finally grew! I only selected four of the hottest peppers to grow under the Solarstorm. Also grown under 24 hours light cycle. Peppers get 1/3 of a tablespoon of growbig fertilizer to one gallon water. Monday, May 20, the Solarstorm light will be flipped to a 14 hour light/ 10 of darkness.
Explosive growth, temps staying around 76*F , and a steady diet of fox farm fertilizer for vegitive growth. Pepper plants had a slow start but are growing, I'm seeing some node branching and a slight stretching on some of the tomato plants. Also a few tomato plants are showing some preflowers, maybe in a week or two on flowers.
