Hot Pepper Grow

Postby sosl0w » Sun Feb 12, 2012 7:28 pm

Hello Everyone, new to the board. Recently got into growing hot peppers. I started growing them during the summer months, then i found myself wanting some over the winter months. I started to grow some in my basement in 5 gallon buckets with shop lights haha. Well i finally decided to stop messing around, I found out about CLW's grow program researching different lights and that's where it began. I am in the middle of building my hydroponics setup so I don't actually have everything 100% setup yet but I figured i would start my post and update it as I go. Here are some pictures of where I'm at so far.

The Solarstorm, first impressions I have to say the light is solid. I was very impressed with the craftsmanship. I have been running it a bit on some plants in my basement until i finish the hydro setup. I'm very anxious to finish and see what it can really do. Big thanks to George from CLW!

I've blurred out my messy garage haha. This setup is 4x4 as I wanted to get as many plants as i could while staying in the 4x4 area range of the light. It will be a DWC system with a pump pumping in one side and a drain on the other. 5" pots in 6" pvc.

That's really more of a NFT than DWC but I can't wait to see more of your peppers...welcome to the forums!

Yea I have been trying to figure out which one its more like. It's really a hybrid as it circulates like a NFT but nothing is sloped for water to run itself so it's going to fill up to a specific height level before it begins to drain. So there will always be say 4 inch's of water in the piping at all time having the roots sitting in the water. So its kinda NFT and DWC at the same time. Not sure how its going to end up working out. We shall see. :D

It'll be fun to watch, I'm designing a new "hybrid" system too. What kind of hot peppers are you going to put in that thing? ;)

I'm not 100% sure yet. I'm still gathering seeds. So far i have decided on these. But i still have 4 more slots. I may throw in a couple cherry tomato plants, possibly tiny tim's. So i can make salsa. I would really like to grow a brain strain but not sure if i will be able to find the seeds. Still looking though.

Hot Red Habanero
Chocolate Habanero
Bhut Jolokia (Ghost Pepper)
Trinidad Scorpion
Jamaican Yellow Scotch Bonnet
Tepin Hot pepper
Regular Jalapeno
Cayenne Peppers

From a basic soil grower those hydro pics are very interesting! Good luck on your crop! I will check back frequently.

Just waiting for my grow tent to come in and things will be getting started! :D

Now I see what you mean, is there going to be enough room for all of those roots? ;)

Haha I'm not sure. I did a lot of reading and everyone i found who did any form of PVC type hydro systems like this said that in order to have enough room for for root growth you have to use 6" PVC, when they used 4" there wasn't enough room for growth and have it keep circulating correctly. So hopefully since I used 6" it will be ok.

Have you measured how many gallons the 6" PVC holds when full? Divide the gallons available (not including reservoir) by the number of plants. That should give you a rough idea how much root can be supported by the tubes.
