LED grow comparison with Solar Storm 400 and Pro Gro 400

Postby sevensride » Mon Jun 03, 2013 7:40 pm

Hello All,

This is the first entry to my grow journal using LED lights. I have a Pro Gro 400 from Hydroponics Hut and a Solar Storm 400 from California Light Works.

I started with the Pro Gro 400 over twelve Pineapple Express rooted clones. I added the Solar Storm light on day 9 and have decided to place them side by side as you will see in the photos below.

I am putting the plants into flower as they are growing quickly! This is when it will get interesting, how do LED's perform under flowering conditions. I will be leaving the lights where they are at and while they are not completely separate we will see how each side of the garden fairs.

Welcome to the Forums!

You might want to re-edit those pictures, there's a lot of white space that needs to be cropped out. ;)

I can already tell you which plants will do the best but I'm looking forward to seeing the results anyway.

I thought I had them cropped and resized, sorry, will clean that up on the follow up. Let me know which ones you think will perform the best as I have picked out the plants I think will perform well.

No problem, just letting you know... ;)

I think the plants under the SS400w and the two closest to the SS will do better than the rest. 60w more light and the UVB should help quite a bit. Not to mention the 5w diodes vs 3w.

That is what I am assuming also, the most robust plant is under the SS400. That is why I put that light on the right side. Thanks SME

For a comparison grow they should be in separate tents.
You will not get comparable results from having the lights in the same tent.

Looks like a fun grow though!

I disagree. It'd be better if they were in different tents but he should still see a difference that can be attributed to the lights and therefore compared. ;)

Yes, for comparison, having separate grow tents would be great however I just wanted to place them side by side and watch each side of the garden. Sure there is overlap of the lights and their effective areas yet as Sister Mary said, we should see a difference within the whole of the garden.

So here is my update. The left side of the garden under the Pro Gro 400 is showing less robust growth with the plants not being as bushy while the SS 400 side is showing more robust growth. No real surprise with 3w vs. 5w led's.

I let the plants get away from me a bit as they are now a bit crowded on the 7th day of flowering. I am looking for bud sites to reveal themselves and will be working to keep the fan leaves from blocking the bud sites.

Early in the veg phase I had a nutrient imbalance and so far that has not happened again :!:

The pictures from my ipad do not do this justice and here they are anyway because something is better than nothing right?

Also, please let me know if you have any questions.

So, now that it is the end of June, how did the two grows turn out? It would have been a simple procedure to put a piece of cardboard or any solid material between the two grows to separate the overlap, and then you could REALLY SEE how each did. The side next tot he one with the wider dispersion of light might end up looking and growing best, even though a material reason was the overlap provided by the wider dispersion light. Please continue to update often through the flowering phase. Thank you. Jerrycokid

GFP grows really should be updated at least weekly but I don't think he's done yet. ;)

This isn't a scientific experiment, it's just a comparison grow and growing is part science and part art. I don't think the grows have to be separated (by tents nor cardboard) to see a difference, especially on the ends. The overlap might even be useful. :D
