Re: A Caregiver's Grow Journal I

My replacement light came on 7 Jun. It was a good thing that my light wasn't totally out or I would have lost my crop. While it took much longer than I anticipated, George told me that all new lights will be more rigorously tested.

I swapped out lights and am back on track. Today marks the start of week 10. The plants seem to like the LED lights, and the light penetration seems to be very good. Leaves near the base of the plant are a healthy green, even when the foliage is thick and heavy.

I'm sorry that I missed a few posts. Life has gotten in the way. It's week 12 and the results are looking good. I expect my largest yield ever. The buds are large and dense.

I'm looking forward to using this light for an entire grow and just not for flowering.

The SolarStorm 800W is a keeper, but it does have it's problems. The three main problems are 1) HEAT, 2) Heavy, 3) Loud fans. This is not good for a stealth grow. The heat needs to be extracted or it can warm a 450 sq ft room in the winter quite nicely, but would be unbearable in summer. I can hear the fans upstairs while standing directly over them. I will have to buy a grow tent, fans, and ducting.

What I would like to see. A light for 2' x2' , 3' x 3', and 5' x 5' grow areas (both vegetative and flowering). Using lighter materials and 3W LEDs to reduce the heat. Good for stealth grows with minimum expense in equipment.

Here are my SOG yield results:
#11 8.5g
#16 13.5g
#13 15.0g
#14 22.1g
#10 22.1g
#9 35.7g
#12 23.3g
#20 23.0g
#19 17.3g
#4 38.8g
#17 19.5g
#1 and #8 are still drying. Total thus far 219.3g 9 (over 7 ounces) with 2 still to go.

This is my best yield ever, and I only had the solarstorm for the flowering stage.

You mentioned, previously, that you'd like to see lights to cover other room sizes and, you're in luck. CLW (and other companies) make different sized lights that should cover those sized rooms. The 5x5 is the hardest one to address with a single light, you'd need a 1250w LED for that, if you want good coverage.

Assuming that you get 300 grams total, you're looking at almost .5g/w for this one. Now that you're more used to the LED you'll probably do better next time, depending on genetics, etc. :D

I'm finally getting around to finishing my journal.

Yields continued:
#1 47.0 g
#8 60.3 g (let this one get tall)

total yield 346.1 g

This is without a doubt the largest yield I have ever had. It was nearly 3 times my usual yields. The Solar Storm (despite it's heat and noise issues) is a keeper.

Thanks for finishing your journal...

346g = about .55g/w

There is something about your system, genetics or growing style that's limiting your yield, we already know that the SS800w light is capable of 1g/w so you may want to look into what you can change to further maximize your efficiency. I'm not surprised that the SS did better than your previous lights, they were too small so that makes sense but you could do even better by tweaking things. Since your journal didn't include pictures it's harder for me to make many suggestions. Are you going to post a new journal for your next grow? You'll probably do better next time too.

Oh, I think I'll move this thread/journal to the CLW forum since that's the place for GFP journals, it'll keep more of them together for those doing research on lights. ;)

Hi Caregiver,
I see that you list heat as one of the main issues with the SolarStorm 800w. SME warned me about this, and I'm seeing a lot of references to this problem around the web. How would you compare its heat output to your old 400w HID? I'm interested in adding a SolarStorm to my garden and I'm trying to gauge how much extra ventilation I'll need...

SME,
You say that the SS800w is capable of producing 1g per watt? That's roughly 640g of dried meds, right? Can you please link me to any grow journals that obtained this kind of yield? 22.8oz isn't shabby even for a 1000w HPS!

Thanks to both of you! :D

The 5w diodes and drivers do generate quite a bit of heat but I'll let the people that actually own the SS lights answer the question of how much in comparison. I've only seen them at the growers expo and in a hydro store.

Yes, I can, hemivette got 1g/w on his last grow and a couple of people have been close:
white-russian-ace-of-spades-t124.html

That said, a 1000w HPS should be able to beat that 1g/w figure, if the grower is experienced and the grow is "fine tuned." 1g/w HID is just what many growers aim for so they know they're getting good results. I've seen a claim of 1.9g/w in another forum but that result was disputed by several people that may or may not have just been trolls. However, even if that 1.9 was really 1.4g/w that's still pretty damn good. ;)

1.9g per watt. I wish!

Thanks for that link. Looks like he's getting good results from NFT. I can't seem to find the information on his LED setup though. I'm looking at the pics and it doesn't look like CA Lightworks' equipment...

Nope, he runs the CLW SS800w...
