I do about 8in to a foot, so far so good. I'm sure you could get closer but I need to cover more ground. Do you know if the solar storm has a UL?

Hey!

I been keeping my medicine the reccomended 18" with good results.
the veggies are a bit further.
Rather than move the light up & down in the grow tent that I use (4 x 4 x 6tall) I will elevate the plants to optimum position in order to maximize the area the light covers in there. I have found though that you can probably get em closer than to the HPS.
My Mother is under a 150watt HPS light (supplimented with 2 t5's mounted vertically in the corners of the 18" by 3' by 3' tall cupboard) & she's about 12 inches, but that's not so powerful a light. Enough to keep one mother though!

(I have read lots, but this is my first grow, so I don't know much, but want to learn & be neighbourly!)

hey all, i have 2 ss led's an 800 and a 400 watt
in the same room . some of my plants r taller then others
as close as 4 inches and as far away as 20".
plants are very helthy, with the 5 watt leds i think u can
increase the distance because they are a bit stronger.
my girls cam in from the outside 3 weeks ago
and man do they like these lights.
the wife says were getting another 800 watter in november
for a veg room. yeeha
good luck to u all, peace

I'd suggest using the 400w for veg and the two 800w lights for flower, once you add the third light of course. ;)

I have been away for about a dozen years. The burning is caused by too much light or high temps?

Heat, the SS800w light puts out quite a bit. I understand they may be working on fixing the cooling issues. Some people are also seeing bleaching from too much light if it's too close to the plants.

A fan wouldn't help with the heat?If these SS800's can bleach the plants there surely must be a pretty good output of photons on a scale with a 1000 watt HID?

If the plants touch the light, or get too close, no fan will help with heat burn. A fan will move the heat around and provide circulation but you have to remove it from the grow area (either with an exhaust fan or a heat pump) and nutrient burn is not heat related. So, it really depends on what kind of burn he plant is showing and other environmental factors.

No, unfortunately, it's more like a 600w HID, based on yields that I've seen so far. :(

A fan does help with the heat but the design is such that on the sides...if you look theres a massive heat sink. On top there are 2 fans. The fans sucking air from the top and push it through that heat sink and out. The Solarstorm is a fairly large if not the largest LED just about I have seen. Even in a 4x4 tent its fairly close to the walls. Its my belief that all of that heat gets diffused by the walls of your grow area and not all of it goes immediately up alot goes down. If you put your face in front of the heat sink your washed with hot air..pretty high volume of it.

If I was to redesign it I would perhaps figure out a way of sending the hot air through the top not the sides so like my Carbon Filter/Fan combo on top can suck it up faster.

To combat the heat and keep my tent at 80-85 I have one side flap open sucking in cool air at the lamps level and one down on the bottom.

Its not really a issue of heat imo but how its directed that is causing a heat build up. A good sized clip on fan pushing air on the plants on high also helps alot.

I am currently running my SS400 about 18 inches from the tallest plant, also I'm currently in veg mode. Good to hear other people have tried it much closer as the plant I'm vegging is a 12 week bloomer and more than likely will grow tall enough to touch the light. Tent is only 5 ft high.

Have a second one also at 18" finishing off an 8 week bloomer. Have yellow fan leaves, but they were previously fried from a Deathstar 240 (which is why i moved to Solarstorms, haven't had a harvest in 4 months) so its not an accurate representation as to how close the SS400 can be.
