Roots can be stained, in many cases, without doing damage, I'd just follow the directions on the package and you'll have to add more every time you change the res. About that, once a week can be a bit of a waste, especially when they're small like they are. I'd suggest every two weeks until they start using more water but that is up to you. If you feel better doing it every week, you're not hurting your plants. There is no one single right way to grow...

A day and a half ago I thought the leaves looked purplish. It looked like a P deficiency, so I added another 1/8 dose (1/4 total so far) and added the Voodoo Juice (AN's version of mycos).

Two days ago:

Today:

Leaves definitely look greener, and the roots are just exploding out of the pots right now.

You may want to get a small piece of panda film or orca film, cut just a little bigger than the top of your reservoir, to both reflect a little light up and to block the light out of your res. Avoid mylar and foil tape for the top but you could use the foil tape to block light out of the bottom part of your res. Leaves like warm, light and CO2 - roots like cool, dark and oxygen.

I still use HID and I'm NOT an LED expert. All of my LED knowledge is from other parties or research so I can't say from first hand experience one way or another. I also run a medical grow consulting business in SoCal.

I had done this with the first smaller res (see first pic on page 1) but didn't get to do it for this one yet.

I would have purchased mylar though, so thanks for the orca film suggestion!

Mylar and foil can cause hot-spots. Panda film (aka black and white poly) is cheaper but orca film is better technology. For the top of a res, either will do just not the mylar/foil solutions. YMMV...

It's the first I hear about Orca film (literally) and they're made in Canada, too.

If that's true then I might as well cover the whole tent with it since this is what the interior of the tent is made with.

Ever thought of writing a book?

I'm going to be building my next tent myself with these rolls then.

If I got started on a book, I'm not sure where I'd stop. ;)

The stuff the tents are made of is decent, orca is better but expensive. If you do line your tent with orca just do it from the top of the res to the bottom of the light when it's all the way up. I even use flat white paint on walls (without tents) but orca would be a step up. No sense in wasting time/money...

I'm not buying a tent for my new grow area, I'll build it this time. It won't really be a tent. Enclosure might be a better word?

When I set up this grow I wasn't sure I'd get my MMAR exemption so had to build a stealth grow. Now that I have it, I can do things more efficiently. My exemption allows me to grow 15 plants. I'm at two now, so I could still grow thirteen more plants, and I have the room for it. But there's no sense in buying a grow tent. I'm very handy with tools and there's about three Home Depots in a 20 mile radius from where I live. I will build a wooden frame and use orca film rolls to set up the reflective surface inside. I had planned to use mylar so you bringing this up is perfect timing.

I'm planning a 4x8 grow area. (32 sqft, 8 plants at 4 sqft per plant). Not sure whether to go with 3 or 4 SS800W, but I'll get the lights at the very end anyway. Now that I know how to setup a grow area I can go the full DIY route. And let's face it: it's a lot more fun that way! I had thought about getting just plain 1000w HID for this but the heat management is so much easier with LED that I prefer this route, even if at the cost of some efficiency.

Hey Frank, have you considered using PVC pipe and fittings to build your tent? It's cheap, light, and it comes apart when you want to move it.

Just a thought. :)

Hey Beef,

I used PVC for my scrog for the reason you mentioned (comes apart easily) but if I would hang 4x lights the size of the SS800 on that I would never trust PVC to be solid enough.

Also, hydro setups make a lot more noise than soil I would imagine because of all the air pumps, water pumps, etc. So I would use acoustic panels (Sonopan) to line the entire enclosure so it remains 100% silent even if I put my ear against the exterior wall :)

Since I have no need for extensive ducting and run sealed tents it's very easy to build something sound proof that will be solid. Even when you're legal noise is always an issue, with enough Sonopan I could run a 8" max fan at full speed and never hear it even if I'm standing near.

I've used Sonopan panels in about every construction project I ever did. It's fantastic. Not hearing a sound is priceless.
