I have been given an old "Stealth" LED unit to experiment with. Has anyone used these before? At this point I'm under-impressed. It is an old unit so probably old technology and it doesn't see very bright.
Can anyone suggest how close I should be running these above my plants? I have read that they should be way closer, but how close?

There are probably a dozen lights with "stealth" somewhere in their name but you probably have an old 1w or 3w light. Do you know how many watts - actual draw? I'd guess you'd want it very close, like 6-12"
