protective eyewear for LED growing?

Postby brerrabbit » Thu Aug 23, 2012 1:14 pm

brand new here,
I got my solar flare 200w full cycle pumping out some great light in my cabinet above recently transplanted clones. I am new to using LED sources but am impressed so far, though i cant help to notice the world looks a bit green for my liking after i close up shop after working with the girls. I can tell that i will need to invest in some glasses/goggles if i'm going to be working around lights like this.
anyone having trouble with this? any solutions that are working?

thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums!

Even looking at pictures of LED lit plants hurts my eyes but any actual damage done is due to UV rays which any good type of sun glasses or goggles should block if the light even outputs UV. If you're talking about glasses that will correct the colors to make them appear more natural, I'm not sure if such a thing exists. A Yahoo search might find something.

trolling around here, shucks about the low volume posting. i'm sure your right about the basic uv protection with sunglasses. i saw an add for color correcting glasses for working under LEDs in Max. Yield, but don't know more than that (help anyone?). but it looks like laser glasses/goggles are the ticket for stopping certain wavelengths, though they are of course a bit more costly than a pair of shades. i will update when i have found something that works.

I kind of like that it's not a huge site, like some of the others, the people are more friendly here and there is not as much drama.

While not color correcting, try a regular pair of sunglasses and see if that helps, maybe the problem is intensity. I'd imagine that the glasses you saw in M.Y. are pretty expensive. You can also get cheap "laser" goggles in places like Home Depot for use with "laser levels" etc. I don't know if they'd help or not but they are cheap.

YMMV... ;)

THe reason why the world looks green to you is because your rods and cones are suffering from color fatigue. Its actually a common experiment. Click the link to see a example. When you star a just a couple colors in your case Red your eyes experience seeing another color when you look away for a tiny bit. Its 100% normal, 100% safe, and will happen with any color that you stare into for longer then about 30 seconds.

I tied to use my costa del mar fishing glasses in blue mirror tint 58O polarized. they helped with the harshness or intensity but made looking at the plants difficult as all the colors hairs and leaves looked the same color . But my eyes didn't hurt at all after work in grow room!! :ugeek:

I'm reviving this thread from the dead as my first post. Only a year late, but I found some awesome grow glasses specific for LED that have the color correction and UV protection. Method Seven makes great grow glasses for all types of grow lights. They recently made some for LEDs that are tinted :geek: green :ugeek: (the color everything turns after leaving your grow room) because that's the only color not in your LEDs. They have two clip on styles, a sunglasses style and even a prescription version which is cool. I haven't tried them yet but from pics and videos they look legit. Probably going to get some soon from (link removed: please see the rules on posting links) but leave a review if you have a pair I'm curious how precise they are. :geek: :ugeek: :geek: :ugeek:

Welcome to the forums! Unfortunately we have some link restrictions for new members here but I'm sure the people that are interested will be able to track them down by the name. I do think that eye protection is a good idea. ;)
