the price drop

Postby puggy » Tue Dec 23, 2014 8:42 pm

One thing I've seen time and time again is that LED's are dear, but i recently saw a 60w led grow light for £10 (well just slightly under that) from china. I did order one to test it out (should get it sometime in January) but it just shows how much these devices are coming down in price. This time last year a 60w led grow light would have cost around £100 but at £10, it's even cheaper than a cfl. It will be interesting to see over the coming year what the trends are on both these cheap china growlights and the better quality growlights will be, as i think we are on the cusp of LED's becoming very economical for general use.

Are you sure it CONSUMES 60w? They often advertise a 60 w LED as comparable to a 60 w incandescent.

Yes, it's a 60 watt (as in all the led add up to 60 watts, havn't tested the actual input yet but most panels don't run the leds on there full rating). They do use 1 watt led's which could be a reason for the low cost as they tend to be more efficient than higher watt leds so the heatsink is cheaper as well (and heatsinks cost more than the leds most of the time)

I got it on ali express (those in the uk that are interested, the price is up due to the exchange rate), only had a chance to test it in a stand up lamp as it's an e27 fitting but it works and for the price the quality actually looks quite good. Once i get round to sorting out a lamp holder for it i'll do a good proper test of it but so far (from the limited testing i've done) it looks good. Only got a standard one but apparently they can customise which led wavelenghts you can put into it.

So yes i'm impressed so far and if it stands up to proper use then i'll be even more impressed.
