LED too hot for wood frame?

I had and edge-lit LED frame made to backlight some artwork. That frame is metal and when it's turned on I don't feel much, if any heat coming off the LEDs. Now I'm trying to make and edge-lit panel for a wood frame with a left-over strip of LEDs. I notice that it feels warm to the touch and wonder if installing it in a wood frame poses a risk of fire. Do you have to be careful with heating in your applications? BTW the transformer I'm using is marked: Input 12W, Output 12V, 500mA. Any thoughts? Thanks.
