Prosource 180w SOG & 250w Hps Northern Lights grow

Hey everyone, this is a journal about my non-clw stuff--prosource 180w is in my 2x2x4 tent. This tent was modified to fit the space from a 5'2" height down to 4'. Adjacent, I have a 16" square tent with 250w Hps. Why more wattage in the smaller tent? Simple, the compact Hps fits the best. I will likely be adding more led wattage in the 2x2 down the line. Both tents are linked to a 200 Cfm 4" inline fan/filter.

As you can see, in the SOG tent (hps) I have 4 plants in a 7 gal, two of which were topped and lst'd to fill in the space. This tent is still vegging.

The 2x2 is a few days into flowering, the larger northern lights in a 5 gal, and the headband is in a 3-gal. So far the lst treatment seems to be producing a lot of bushy branch growth.

Temps in both tents are a bit on the warm side, 90 degrees, but they seem to like it! The bud porn is a nug from my last scrog run. Not too much else to report, stay tuned!

Wouldn't it be better to put the HPS in the 2x2 and the prosource light in the smaller tent? ;)

You may be right, and I had thought about it as well, but here's my concern:

The side vents on the prosource led would be right up against or close to the sides of the 16" tent which is bowing inward cuz of negative pressure. Maybe this is ok though? The 1w diodes do seem to run pretty cool, and I think there would still be airflow since I have good ventilation anyway. As it is, the Hps is mounted just a few inches below the top of the tent, with a small reflector, leaving me a lot of space to work with ( more than I need for scrog, I found). Seems to be fine heatwise cuz I am sucking air right above the light.

I would certainly be able to take advantage of the 250w more in the 2x2. Although making the switch will involve some labor in tight spaces, I'm ready to do it if you think the ps light will run ok in the tight space. The 200w solar flare would be PERFECT, but its being used right now 8-)

I don't own a PS light so only you can decide that but I don't see why it wouldn't. You could even hook the vents of the two tents together and possibly vent them both with one fan (if it's big enough) and the neg pressure. ;)

Why neg and not pos pressure?

Ok I will try test fitting the light and hopefully be able to make the switch.

I am venting both tents with the one 200 Cfm fan, the way it's configured, the air is sucked into a small 3 1/2 " pipe routed from the house drawing in cool air, into the smaller tent, out the top of the tent by 4" duct, then into the 2x2. then theres another pipe at the top of that one connected to external inline fan/filter, exhausting into crawl space, which has cracks leading outside. so i would think the positive pressure is more on the outside of the tents. The fan is sucking enough to create a slight vacuum inside the tent sucking the sides inward. Is this called pos pressure instead of neg? I'm not too good with the science of it i just set it up that way to keep the odor down and free up space inside the tents.

No, that's neg pressure. Positive pressure would have the fan on the intake side, blowing the air instead of sucking it and the tents would bow out not in.

So, what do you do about the odor once it gets in the crawl space?

No detectable odor has gotten into the crawl space because I have the fan pushing air thru a filter. The carbon filter is the last piece to come in contact with the grow room air. So the air starts inside, goes into the small tent, then larger tent, fan, then filter then crawl space to the outdoors. I know those filters work better when u suck air thru them supposedly, but this setup has been working fine and odor free!

The advantage is that I get more space in the tents, which I need with only 4' headspace. As you've stated before, every grow decision has pros and cons. In this case, I probably gave up a few Cfm's in exchange for interior space. 8-)

Yeah, if you switched to pos pressure you'd have to put the carbon filter on the exhaust side too. The fans do recommend putting the filters on the intake side but it *should* work either way. You might burn the fan out quicker depending on construction but fans aren't that expensive and inline carbon filters are more expensive. ;)

So here is a pic of the 16" tent with the prosource installed. Looks like a snug fit, but I think this should work. I'm taking a break and then going back in to install the 250w.

The canopy is starting to fill in nicely, maybe veg a couple more days? I felt like I vegged too short last time.

I didn't realize that those UFO lights were that big; I though they were like 9-12" diameter. Keep an eye on the temps if the vents are partially blocked. ;)
