Yeah I figured 2x2 was a little ambitious for the 220 ;)
Honestly I should have just taken the dent to the wallet and the resulting uncomfortable conversation with the finance manager (my wife) and grabbed the 440.
I'll definitely be able to upgrade after this grow though so in the meantime I guess I'll see what I can do with this little guy :)

Day 8

So no signs of life yet which is unusual. I would normally have germinated the whole pack and picked the one with the most vigor but since these seeds were so expensive along with the fact that I also wished to make more seeds with another Kali I decided to roll the dice with one.
Alas, I rolled snake eyes. :(

So in go 2 more to soak and I'm praying to the Canna gods for a happy baby girl soon. ;)

Hey Xarlan,

Nice looking set-up so far. I had a question about your seeds: How long and in what you do soak your seeds? is it just plain tap water? is RO or distilled water better or worse or does it matter?

I bought some seeds awhile ago and I've been reading about the best way to get them to successfully "pop"

Thanks,RKY

Heya, RKY,

I use plain tap water usually without a problem. I've also used a root stimulator like rhizotonic before which helps speed up the process a bit.

I keep it in a glass in a warm dark place until they sink (sometimes you have to give it a small tap to check if it's ready). Then I put them between damp paper towels and in a sealed container then back in a warm dark place until the tap roots pop out. Then into a rockwool cube until the stem pops out. And then it's in the system.

I've heard of several ways to do it. The breeder of the Kali seeds, Simon, even suggests putting the paper towel in a ziplock bag and hanging it on the wall to promote the tap root to orient itself down and not try to dig itself into the paper towel and curling up. I check on it too often to have seen that happen though :D

thanks for the info. i've always grown from clones but like i said i bought some seeds and at least want to try it one of these days. they are so expensive that i want to give it my best shot on the first go round.

do you use feminized or regular seeds? i got the fem ones thinking that i wouldn't waste a lot of time to get seeds sprouted, growing etc and then find out they are all males. which is usually how my luck works.

Honestly I'm no expert and I'm sure SisterMaryElephant would have better insight but imho, regular seeds are a better way to go if you have the ability to clone a mother. Regular seeds are just more robust and stable.

I, however, choose feminized because I don't have the space for a mother plant nor the budget to waste nutrients and power on a male like you mentioned. So I grow from seed to harvest and start over ;)

Hoped that helped. :)

I wouldn't necessarily say that regular seeds are more robust, some regular seeds have bad genetics and some feminized seeds are very stable. It's probably more about the breeder than anything else. You could say that established regular landrace seeds are very stable and robust but not all landrace seeds will grow well in different areas.

I'd say grow what you like and what works for you and don't worry if they're fem or reg... ;)
